Forest of Secrets (Episode 13-14)

Oof, my heart.

[white_box] There is a spoiler for The King 2 Hearts, so if you haven’t watched that drama you might want to skip this post (or scroll past the first two sentences, lol. I should figure out how to make spoiler tags.) [/white_box]

Episode 13

Well, this is difficult.

I definitely feel a sense of muted shock. I want to believe that we’re being punked because Eun-soo is a character I came to like a lot. Like, this is Eun Shi-kyung (The King 2 Hearts) levels of numbness and heartbreak. From the dissolution of the special investigation team to Section Chief Kang’s promotion to Chief Prosecutor (an opportunist if I ever saw one), this episode was just a series of more lows for the team. Aside from the obvious ending, watching Shi-mok’s reaction in the previews sucked. Was Yeo-jin asking him to be nice to her a bit of foreshadowing? If so, that is so cruel. While Shi-mok really didn’t have time for her at that moment (does he ever?), I think keeping her at a distance at this point was his way of keeping her safe, and he had no way of knowing that she was calling him for something important, or that it would be the last phone call she ever made. And then there’s Young Il-jae saying that his justice is protecting his family… ugh. I can’t get over it. I’m choosing to believe in the writer, and hope that Eun-soo wasn’t fridged for the sake of Shi-mok’s emotional development/man pain, because that would be doing such a disservice to her character.

I rewound the last part of the episode a few times, and a part of me wants to believe that Yoon was not the one who killed Eun-soo. He had blood on his hands, but he wasn’t wearing handcuffs. Also of note is that the knife used to stab Eun-soo was the same floral one found in Park Moo-sung’s house. Surely that’s no coincidence. If so, what does it mean? How does that explain Yoon’s appearance, and where is Ga-young? — 07/22/17 @ 4:47PM

. . .

Episode 14

SONG OF THE DAY: Lee Hi – 스쳐 간다, because I’m in my feelings and would like to wallow in my sadness for a while :(

  • I think this episode was infinitely sadder than yesterday’s (I cried more lmao), especially since the aftershock of Eun-soo’s death is so far reaching. I’m totally heartbroken. Seeing her parents at her funeral was painful, as was Young Il-jae’s outburst when an unusually frazzled Shi-mok showed up. I don’t believe that Shi-mok was trying to pin the blame on her father for her death; whether it was appropriate or not, it looked like it was coming from a place of hurt — everyone thought they were doing what was right to protect Eun-soo. The only problem was that in doing so, they underestimated her tenacity.
  • Shi-mok’s voice cracking when he asked Young Il-jae why he just stood there spectating and kept quiet for all those years — ouch. :( Whether he had any romantic inclinations or not (I still cannot believe people are thinking about this, IT’S NOT HAPPENING! and ew @ people who are like, “I’m just glad Yeo-jin will be there to comfort him”… have a seat), Eun-soo’s death hurt him a lot. Being unfocused while driving, falling at the hospital, the nightmare — even the outburst in the episode 15 preview. He’s not the apathetic robot people make him out to be.
  • It seems that Seo Dong-jae believes that Lee Chang-joon had a hand in murdering Eun-soo. He’s certainly very suspicious of the events around him, but I don’t think he’s seeing the big picture… just bits and pieces from what he can sneakily get his hands on and hear.
  • And despite everything, I think Lee Chang-joon is being set up as quite the tragic character. I think he’s actually working for waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less than nefarious reasons than we think, even though all signs point to him being the bad guy. A theory: I think the apology he made was because of something he’s about to do, and that something is taking down Chairman (?) Lee. I think this is something he’s been working towards for a while, but the tragedy of the situation was that he/they fell in love. Not only that, she’ll be affected by his take down because her father divested his stocks illegally in order to avoid paying taxes, or whatever.
  • As for Section Chief (now Deputy Chief) Yoon… man, I don’t know. Something in the water ain’t clean. It is clear at this point that he is very guilty of something. A popular theory floating around is that CEO Park is responsible for the death of Yoon’s son, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. Perhaps that’s something that Chief Secy. Lee is privy to, considering that he asked Yoon to dig around Shi-mok earlier on in the series. It would have been so easy for them to work together! While I don’t know what to make of Ga-young seeing the number “0.7”, I don’t think he’s responsible for her attempted murder or Eun-soo’s death.
  • Another theory: he’s being framed and the investigation is being led to believe that Yoon is responsible for all of the above. Secy. Woo is the one who murdered Eun-soo and tried to kill Ga-young. They knew far too much and were absolutely dangerous to Hanjo Group’s existence. I think what happened was Secy. Woo went to the Young home (on Chairman Lee’s orders) to steal the USB, but Eun-soo got there first. He saw her, and killed her. I think that’s enough to explain Secy. Woo suddenly going on a business trip. From the looks of it, this will probably spur Hanjo Group to act since they would be operating on the belief that they’re after Secy. Woo, not Yoon (which I’m not sure they accounted for or even knew about).
  • Shi-mok, Yeo-jin, and Young Il-jae may think that Hanjo Group has the USB, but I want to believe that if Eun-soo reached it first, she wouldn’t have kept it with her. She’s smarter than that. The security footage only shows her leaving the apartment, so the truth of the matter will be revealed next week… — 7/23/16 @ 4:52PM
