That’s a bar.
I’m so glad I waited until I could dedicate some time to play this game. I last tried to start it in in April 2022, but couldn’t make it past the first case for some reason. Well, I know the reason. Tutorial cases are a slog! I ended up getting just past where I stopped last time, and it gets so much better after that.
For starters, English language as displayed in the game is fucking hilarious. It’s just such good game design! This is also where the DESIGN design gets into its bag a little because the animations are perfection. I think the designs in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney were just a tad lifeless in a certain way, but it seems more animated now.
No really, they were in. Their. Bag. Kazuma’s exasperation? Chef’s kiss. Ryunosuke checking his hands after he slams the table? Chef’s kiss. (See how it changes when he’s sure of himself 🥹) His moments of realization (it’s two quick animations and they are so good). Oh, my god! This was also on the 3DS, so I wonder just how much they remastered for the Switch because these are some very great animated improvements. So far.
Now the lines about the Queen’s English? Japanese vulgar tones? I knew I was in for some “stuff” but not right away oooooooohweeeeeee
I’m finally at the second case and I have to say I am a little bit disappointed that we’re back to where we started with the first case, which is that Ryunosuke finds himself in a situation he has to fight himself out of… again. I don’t know how much more of that I can take given how long it took me to get past the first case, and for that reason I haven’t played it in a week. I’m determined to finish this game… games… since I have a lot on my backlog I’d like to get through, though!
